Brandi Carlile helped Jimmy Buffett get credibility with "lesbian fisherwomen."
At last night's Hollywood Bowl concert honoring the "Margaritaville" singer, Carlile came out on stage to perform "Come Monday," People reports.
Before her performance, she spoke of her friendship with the beloved songman, revealing that he would become friends with "lesbian fisherwomen" by telling them he knew her. The "Broken Horses" singer said that "he just treated [her] like gold, and he used to go out on the water and make friends with lesbian fisherwomen by telling him that he knew 'Brandi Carlile' and that they were fishing buddies.'
"Hey, Brandi, I met some more lesbians. I gave them your phone number. Next time you're out in the Cape and the stripers are in, they're going to call you," he would sometimes text her.
The pair would occasionally fish together, becoming great companions. Even when Buffett was not around, he would be able to call in a favor from a sailor to come pick her up and take her out on the water.
"I could call Jimmy up, it didn't matter where I was, and he'd have some salty dog captain come out and pick me up and take me fishing, even if he couldn't be there off the drop off, off Anegada or in the Gulf," she told the audience.
Carlile went on to say that she speculates that Buffett was so "good" to her "mostly because he knew how much I love his wife Jane, who's one of my most precious, precious friends."
As the story concluded, the "Right on Time" singer said that she was "proud and honored" to sing "Come Monday," "even as a lesbian."
Jimmy Buffett passed away in Sept. 2023 after a battle with skin cancer. Following his death, the Grammy-winner took to Instagram to commemorate the loss.
"My relationship with the great Jimmy Buffett consisted mostly of exchanging fishing spots... advice about where, how and with whom to catch fish all over the world. Sometimes we'd bitch about how nobody cares enough about the crowd to be a proper entertainer anymore lol... but that's as heavy as it got. He just lived light. Just wanted people to have fun and love life... and in my case, catch fish."
She shared a text exchange between them from when she was sitting "on the beach somewhere drinking a margarita," realizing how the "Cheeseburger In Paradise" singer had created and popularized that type of lifestyle.
"He was a legend for having fun. There are no excuses for not finding some way to make yourself happy. What a legacy," she concluded. "I learned a lot from Jimmy just by living in a world that he put art into. We're all gonna miss him... and then get right back out on the water of course."
Thursday's memorial concert was a star-studded event, also featuring performances by Paul McCartney, the Eagles, Jon Bon Jovi, Zac Brown, Jackson Browne, and more.
