FKA Twigs is standing up against unregulated use of Artificial Intelligence as she appeared before the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Intellectual Property on Tuesday (April 30).

Formally known as Tahliah Debrett Barnett, FKA Twigs wrote a letter to the senate subcommittee with regards to the discussion surrounding The NO FAKES Act: Protecting Americans from Unauthorized Digital Replicas.

FKA Twigs Voices Support For Regulated AI

Twigs explained in her detailed letter the dangers of having one's "likeness" controlled by other people. In 2023, public figures, even huge artists like Taylor Swift, have been victims of sexual AI deep fakes.

"I am here because my music, my dancing, my acting, the way that my body moves in front of a camera and the way that my voice resonates through a microphone is not by chance; they are essential reflections of who I am," Twigs shared, as quoted by People magazine. "My art is the canvas on which I paint my identity and the sustaining foundation of my livelihood. It is the essence of my being. Yet this is under threat."

Twigs implored senators to enact regulations to safeguard authenticity and protect artists like her and the public in general against misappropriation of their inalienable rights.

FKA Twigs Reveals She Created Her Own AI Likeness

Elsewhere during her appearance, Twigs also revealed to the room that she had created her own deepfake, highlighting how "exciting" artificial intelligence is for her as a "future-facing artist."

"In the past year, I have developed my own deepfake version of myself that is not only trained in my personality but also can use my exact tone of voice to speak many languages," Twigs said, as reported by The Hill. "I will be engaging my AI twigs later this year to extend my reach and handle my online social media interactions, whilst I continue to focus on my art from the comfort and solace of my studio."

Twigs also expounded on how protection against AI deepfakes would protect the "vulnerable public" from exploitation in the future if left unregulated.

"By protecting artists with legislation at such a momentous moment in our history we are protecting a five-year-old child in the future from having their voice, likeness and identity taken and used as a commodity without prior consent, attribution or compensation," Twigs wrote. "I stand before you today because you have it in your power to help protect artists and their work from the dangers of exploitation and theft inherent in this technology if it remains unchecked."
