Hunx and his Punx frontman Seth Bogart has announced a new solo album, due out next year via Burger Records. With the announcement, he has shared the forthcoming album's first single, "Eating Makeup," which features Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, and The Julie Ruin and was produced by Cole MGN. Listen to the new synth punk song, "Eating Makeup," below.
Bogart has previously released a solo effort, 2012's Hairdresser Blues, under his usual moniker, Hunx. However, this new LP will be his debut effort under his birth name. While the artist has yet to reveal the album's title and exact release date, he has shared some of the collaborations we can look forward to. As Brooklyn Vegan reports, the album will also feature Rookie magazine founder and editor Tavi Gevinson, Australian electropop singer Chela, and LA-based noise pop quartet Cherry Glazerr.
For those yet to be well-acquainted with Bogart, the fact that the feminist punk pioneer Hanna worked with him on "Eating Makeup" should offer a glimpse into his career. The openly gay Bay Area musician got his start with the electroclash band Gravy Train!!!!, perhaps best known for their queer-themed, sexually-explicit lyrics. Following Gravy Train!!!!'s dissolution, he formed Hunx and his Punx. It is with this project that the artist fully developed his alter-ego, Hunx, and explored similar queer themes but instead through the lyrical tropes of 1950s girl groups. Hunx' music has always veered towards the bubblegum-flavored Ramones-esque end of the garage punk spectrum, and the new track seems to confirm that despite the name change, listeners can expect some more of the same old Hunx fans have grown to love. Watch the video for Hunx and His Punx' "Street Punk" below.
In case you couldn't guess from the title of his previous solo effort, Bogart used to be a hairdresser, a theme he explores in many of his lyrics. The image of the beauty parlor can also be seen throughout his visual art, which you can check out on his website.
