Aimee Mann and Ted Leo have teamed up once again as The Both to release a brand new Christmas song titled "You're A Gift" and if this groovy track doesn't put you in the holiday spirit, we don't know what will.
The duo, consisting of Mann and Ted Leo of Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, self-produced and quietly released a debut self-titled album as The Both on April 15 via Mann's own label Super Ego Records. The album had been in the works for some time, with the artists unveiling lead single "Milwaukee" earlier in the year before deciding to randomly stream the entire LP online.
"You're A Gift" is not The Both's first Christmas tune. The band previously released "Nothing Left To Do (Let’s Make This Christmas Blue)" in 2014 just in time for last year's holiday. The song, which has a very endearing title, doesn't quite come off as a Christmas song, but the lyrics focus on a theme of longing for someone to hunker down with and enjoy the holiday spirit with. The photo displayed in the clip shows an evil Frosty and anxiety-ridden Santa kind-of going through a power struggle, with jolly old Saint Nick seemingly overwhelmed by the holiday.
The Both are currently on tour with Liz Phair, bringing a sort-of Christmas special to towns and cities across America, with SF Weekly pointing out that Phair has reinterpreted some of her songs with a holiday theme, for example, "Why Can't I" becomes "Why Can't I Wreath." The song "You're A Gift" will be available for purchase next week, just in time for Christmas, so get your iTunes gift cards ready.
The Both will perform with Phair at The Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Virginia, tonight (Dec. 15), which will serve as the last scheduled date of the mini-tour. You can stay up-to-date with the duo via their official website.
