Perhaps in anticipation of the upcoming Jimi Hendrix biopic All Is By My Side (starring OutKast's Andre Benjamin), two albums by the legendary guitarist are being reissued. The Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge, which were originally released in 1971 following Hendrix's death at age 27, are being remastered and reissued on CD, LP, and digital download on Sept. 16.
Both The Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge were compiled from sessions that took place between Dec. 1969 and the summer of 1970, in which Hendrix was attempting to record a double album titled First Rays of the New Rising Sun. The album was left unfinished when Hendrix passed away in Sept. 1970, leaving engineer Eddie Kramer and drummer Mitch Mitchell to piece together these two albums from the existing recordings.
According to Rolling Stone, both albums are being remastered by engineer Bernie Grundman, whose impressive resume includes Michael Jackson's Thriller and Prince's Purple Rain. Though The Cry of Love has been issued on CD before, as a part of the 1997 attempt to recreate the unfinished First Rays of the New Rising Sun album, Rainbow Bridge has never before been issued on CD.
