Reuters confirmed the news, revealing that the French Culture Ministry said that they had lost a "timeless Francophone icon."

France has been mourning the loss of Birkin. In a statement, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said that the "most Parisian of the English has left us," adding that: "We will never forget her songs, her laughs and her incomparable accent which always accompanied us."
