Local news outlets confirmed in reports that Peruvian rock icon Pedro Suárez-Vértiz has died at the age of 54.
Initial updates said Suárez-Vértiz died at his Milaflores district home in Lima, Peru, on Thursday, December 28. The famed musician notably dominated the music industry with his hit tracks like "Me estoy enamorando" and "Los globos del cielo."
Pedro Suárez-Vértiz's Cause of Death Revealed
Local Peruvian radio station RPP cited police sources who disclosed that the singer-songwriter died from a heart attack. The health issue occurred years after he quit performing due to dysarthria caused by bulbar neuromuscular syndrome, a disease that affected his ability to speak and breathe.
Suárez-Vértiz's health problem led him to give up his musical career and kept him out of the stage 10 years before his death.
Meanwhile, the municipality of Miraflores issued a separate statement on X to confirm his death.
"From the municipality of Miraflores we regret the death of Pedro Martín José María Suárez-Vértiz Alva, a prominent resident of our district, musician, singer, composer, producer and writer," the message read. "Our deepest condolences go out to his relatives, family and friends."
His friends, colleagues and fans also shared their heartfelt messages online.
On Instagram, Suárez-Vértiz's pal and fellow singer-songwriter Gian Marco recalled the time they talked for the last time on November 13.
The message went on, "I stay with everything you told me, with your very particular way of saying things. That's just how you were. There were no half measures with you... witty, creative... an absolute lover of guitars [...] Of all your songs I prefer 'Me Elevé'... it accompanied me in hard times and now it will stay forever in me."
One fan wrote, "I'm so f------ sad rn, I will miss him A LOT. Pedro Suárez Vertiz RIP."
"RIP Pedro Suárez-Vertiz, shoutout to his family, and icon of Latino nerodivergency," another added.

Pedro Suárez-Vértiz's Legacy
Suárez-Vértiz started his career in the 1980s, but he only pursued a solo career in 1993 with his debut album, "No existen (Técnicas para olvidar)."
From there, he dropped more albums that strengthened his musical empire, including, "Amazonas," "Degeneración actual," "Póntelo en la lengua" and "Talk Show."
Details about his funeral and memorial are yet to be announced.
