Though I've performed music in Jersey City before, I'd never gotten a true sense of the city's tight-knit art scene until I visited last night for a three-act show at the Dopeness, a Mexican restaurant with a performance space in the back room. As Steve Donahue of Young Legs described Jersey City to me, it's like "Brooklyn, but less smelly and terrifying." Ever since neighboring Hoboken became too stiflingly gentrified to support an arts community (its legendary venue Maxwell's closed last year), Jersey City has proven itself to be a worthy alternative for Hudson County, and all of North Jersey for that matter. -

Highlights from 2014 Hangout Music Festival Day 3
Hangout Music Festival came to a close Sunday in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Sundays at music festivals always have a bit of a different vibe than the other days. It can really polarize the audience between the lame-os and the coolest people on the planet. Some people are passed out in the middle of the field from the fatigue brought on by the weekend, while others are still going 110 percent to get the most out of their weekend. The conversations overheard in the crowd are always the most interesting on Sundays, and the community between different groups of friends can spawn some interesting stories. -

'American Idol' Season 13 Recap: Top 3 Go Home
Somehow, it's already May 14. And somehow, American Idol has whittled its competitors down to three: Caleb Johnson, Alex Preston and Jena Irene. This week, the top 3 performed a pick by Randy Jackson, a pick by the three judges and a pick from their previously performed songs chosen by their hometown. -
Concert Review: Slint at the Bowery Ballroom
Nobody checked my ticket last night at the Bowery Ballroom. I held mine out at the front entrance, but the people there were just checking IDs and giving out 21+ wristbands. At the entrance to the bar, where the tickets were actually being scanned, I simply walked right in without anyone seeing me or telling me what to do. So even though I had a ticket, I could have easily snuck into the Bowery Ballroom last night to see Slint. -
Concert Review: Cat Circus in Bloomfield, NJ, 5/2/14
Like a great number of "venues" in New Jersey, the Cat Circus is just the basement of a house rented out by college students, but it's definitely the cleanest, most organized college house I've ever set foot in. The original bill for this show/birthday party/vegan BBQ consisted of eight acts, which is three or four more than is usually recommended for a house show, but two of the acts ended up not playing, which I'm sure the neighbors were quite thankful for. -
'American Idol' Season 13 Recap: Top 5 Stay On Track With Fan's Choice Songs
Season 13 of American Idol trudges on, and this week the theme that allowed every contestant to more or less remain in his or her comfort zone was "Fan's Choice," where Twitter users picked songs using the hashtag #IdolRequest, and the top 5 picked songs based on what the people wanted. -
Concert Review: The Meatlocker in Montclair, New Jersey
Shows at the Meatlocker in Montclair, NJ sit somewhere in between basement shows and legitimate venue shows. Technically it’s the basement to an apartment building, but I’m pretty sure nobody who lives in the apartment actually goes down into that cold, filthy space. Anyone can rent out the space for the night and put on a show, and while big acts such as Ted Leo, Wavves, and Screaming Females have played there, most nights it’s just a bunch of small, scrappy punk bands playing for a couple of people, like the show I went to last night. -
'American Idol' Season 13 recap: Jessica Meuse and C.J. Harris Refuse to Come Alive for Top 6
American Idol got a little bit country and a little bit rock 'n' roll and a little bit of Grumpy Cat last night for its top six performances. For the first time, each of the remaining contestants performed two songs a piece. The first half of the show? Marked by rock songs of all sorts, from Neon Trees to Heart. The second half was all country with two tracks by Idol alumna Carrie Underwood and a few comfy classics.
