Lizzo graced the stage at the 2024 Grammys on a significant Sunday evening, February 4.
However, what truly shocked viewers was her unexpected act of presenting an award to her close friend SZA, especially considering the ongoing sexual harassment case that has been making headlines.
Public Outcry
Expressing their opinions about Lizzo's presence at the Grammy Awards, various individuals took to social media to share their thoughts.
According to OK magazine, one individual questioned why Lizzo was allowed to attend the event, while another expressed surprise that she was still relevant.
Another commenter recalled allegations of the "Truth Hurts" singer's unkind behavior, expressing disappointment that the industry seemed unconcerned.
A fourth one brought up the notion of Lizzo being "canceled," questioning her continued involvement at the Grammys.
Controversial Comeback
Lizzo found herself embroiled in a controversy when three individuals who used to dance for her came forward with allegations of mistreatment, harassment, and discrimination during their time with the 35-year-old artist and her company, Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc.
In a decision made by Judge Mark H. Epstein at the Los Angeles Superior Court, the "Juice" singer's argument faced dismissal under the anti-SLAPP statute due to its lack of relevancy to the lawsuit, despite some elements having merit.
Designed to protect individuals' First Amendment rights, the anti-SLAPP (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation) statute offers defendants a fast method to dismiss baseless lawsuits.
The allegations that the judge brushed off encompassed various aspects, such as body-shaming a dancer, a creative photoshoot involving nudity, and the dancers being compelled to remain on standby when not touring.
"This case presents several difficult issues. And the courts are rightfully wary of injecting themselves into the creative process. Finding the right balance is often no easy task; this case is a perfect example."
Despite this, all the other allegations persist, encompassing acts of sexual, religious, and racial discrimination, instances of sexual harassment, the disheartening visits to the Bananenbar in Amsterdam and Crazy Horse in Paris, unfounded accusations of imprisonment, and acts of physical assault.
"The verdict also fittingly signifies that Lizzo and any other prominent figure cannot be shielded from such disgraceful behavior solely due to their fame," the judge said.
"Our anticipation now lies in undertaking a thorough investigation and diligently organizing the case for trial," Epstein conveyed.
"It is dangerous for the court to weigh in, ham-fisted, into constitutionally protected activity. But it is equally dangerous to turn a blind eye to allegations of discrimination or other misconduct forms merely because they occur in a speech-related environment."
Stefan Friedman, the representative for the singer, expressed his gratitude to the judge for discerning the truth amid the chaos and acknowledging the essence of the artist as a powerful individual whose purpose is to uplift and promote positivity.
Despite the judge's decision to retain certain aspects of the lawsuit, the lawyer stated that they are prepared to challenge those elements through an appeal and remain optimistic about achieving a favorable outcome.
