The country music genre has been one of the most controversial music genres there is. "The Voice" alum Cassadee Pope, who has been busting her behind to make a name for herself in Nashville, announced that she would be leaving Country music.
An outspoken woman, Pope follows Maren Morris in denouncing the said music genre, who also expressed her critical thoughts about Country music and the artists that are in it.
Why Did Cassadee Pope Left Country Music?
Speaking to Rolling Stone, Cassadee Pop revealed that she received backlash from Morgan Wallen and Jason Aldean's wife after she spoke out against racism and transphobia in the country music scene.
"I realize every genre has problematic people in it," revealed. "I'm not saying there's not a frontman in a band who hasn't been accused of something in rock music. But I guess rock is in my bones more. You're not completely ostracized and shamed for speaking out."
Morgan Wallen was heavily criticized after being videotaped saying a racist slur, while Jason Aldean's contentious "Try That In A Small Town" music video includes footage of BLM protests while he's performing in front of a courthouse that was infamous for lynching Black men.
Pope was one of the few people who were "disgusted" by Wallen's remarks in 2021 when he was caught using a slur. But when asked if he would have the same response now, she says otherwise.
Meanwhile, Pope was more unapologetic with her response to Brittany Aldean for comparing her "tomboy phase" to people transitioning.
"In that moment, I felt so proud. I had no feeling of regret. I just kept my head down and kept going," she added. "It's only been the past few months that I've let my guard down in therapy and said, 'Wait, I actually wasn't OK.' But I think that kind of comes with the territory of including activism in your life."
Maren Morris Leaving Country Music
Sharing her thoughts with Jimmy Fallon on "The Tonight Show," Maren Morris was especially candid in her explanation on why she's leaving country music.
"I don't think it's something you can really leave, because it's a music that's in me and that I grew up doing," she confessed. "That's the music that I write, even if I've been sort of genre fluid my whole career. You can't, like, scrub the country music out."
But Maren Morris isn't completely shutting everything out.
"I'm taking the good parts with me and all are welcome. But, yeah, there were some, you know, facets of it that I didn't really jive with anymore. I'm a lot happier now," she continued to say.
