The 2024 BRITs was a redeeming year for singer-songwriter RAYE after she took home the most BRITs on a single night with six. She won Best R&B Act, Song of the Year for "Escapism," Best New Artist, Songwriter of the Year, British Artist of the Year, and British Album of the Year for "My 21st Century Blues."
However, her triumphant night seemed less appealing to the British audience, as the broadcast ratings recorded their lowest viewership in the past ten years.
BRITs Viewership Dropped The Lowest This Decade
A source told The Daily Mail that the viewership for the 2024 BRIT Awards has dropped to almost 900,000 viewers compared to last Year's ceremony.
The source seemed to have blamed the lack of a "big US name" on this year's performance roster and the lack of "memorable duets."
Many coin the BRITs as the biggest night in British music, signifying the GRAMMY counterpart on British soil. The outlet reported that the peak viewers were only 3 million and averaged around 2.5 million.
The viewership plummeted as it was recorded that the peak viewers last year were about 3.9 million and averaged approximately 3.3 million.
"It is meant to be the music industry's big showcase event. And it's lost its sparkle," the source added.
Last year recorded the highest in seven years, with names such as Harry Styles, Lizzo, and Wet Leg performing on the show.
Reportedly, in 2016, the show peaked at 6.2 million viewers. Since then, it has declined Year after Year, with the 2022 show averaging 2.7 million viewers.
The 2023 showcase was praised for the uptick in viewership, but it's still low compared to the years that came before - a stark contrast to the 9 million viewers in its heyday.
The Daily Mail also added that the show set records-the most BRITs won in one night and the lowest viewers to date.
Bosses were hopeful viewing figures had turned a corner, but this year's show broke records for two reasons-Raye won the highest number of gongs in one night but the lowest viewing figures to date.
RAYE Won 6 BRITs In One Night
After RAYE's successful night, she is now at par with Harry Styles, Phil Collins, Oasis, and David Bowie with six awards.
In her acceptance speech for the British Album of the Year, her grandmother joined her onstage, and they shared a heartwarming hug in front of everyone at the O2 Arena in London.
Meanwhile, SZA won International Artist of the Year, Miley Cyrus won International Song of the Year with "Flowers," Boygenius bagged the International Group of the Year, and Dua Lipa won Best Pop Act. (via Billboard)
