Beyoncé's hair care line, Cécred, has drawn attention for allegedly mimicking the packaging design of another brand.
The unfolding saga emerged as Fiona Glen, a style expert, took to LinkedIn to highlight the striking resemblances between Beyoncé's products and those of TWYG, a skincare company from New Zealand.
Beyoncé Cécred Controversy
In a post, Glen stated, "The first image is the newly launched CéCRED haircare brand from Beyoncé. The second image is a New Zealand-based skincare brand, TWYG, which I shared on a work WhatsApp group back in November. There is a stark similarity, let's be honest both are aesthetically pleasing, impactful but horrifically over-packaged."
"There's a good chance that the packaging similarity is a coincidence; however, it's proof that it's harder than ever to launch a truly different product and IP is increasingly difficult to defend."
In the comments section of the TWYG packaging project, Amanda Gaskin, the creative mind responsible for the design, directly addressed Cécred with a pointed accusation.
"As the designer behind TWYG skincare's brand and packaging, launched in June 2023, I couldn't help but feel a pang of deep disappointment upon discovering Beyoncé's recent hair care packaging," she said. "Over the span of 18 months, my team poured countless hours into TWYG, with a significant portion of that time dedicated to crafting the custom-formed lids."
According to Gaskin, considering the accolades TWYG has garnered over the past year, it's surprising that Beyoncé's team had not yet come across their packaging designs. Reflecting on the success of TWYG, she mentioned the numerous awards their packaging had proudly earned.
She expressed intense disappointment but told social media she appreciated their recognition of the similarity and understanding of her emotions.
