Yes. We are all aware of Jennifer Lopez's nice assets but to call her "the original trailblazing butt girl" may be a bit of a stretch. Okay, quite a bit of a stretch.
Booty is nothing new and the neck turning, eye bulging feature has gone underappreciated for some time now but not to worry. Vogue recently had a revelation and declared that we are "officially in the era of the big booty."
According to the Huffington Post, the fashion and lifestyle magazine published an article on Wednesday in an attempt to give a history lesson on the progression of cultural regard for derrieres. The story was written to create a buzz for the release of a new Jennifer Lopez and Iggy Azalea song.
In part, the article reads:
"For years it was exactly the opposite; a large butt was not something one aspired to, rather something one tried to tame in countless exercise classes. Even in fashion, that daring creative space where nothing is ever off limits, the booty has traditionally been shunned...Perhaps we have Jennifer Lopez to thank (or blame?) for sparking the booty movement. When she first arrived on the scene in the late nineties, a lot of the buzz surrounding her focused on the back of her voluptuous body."
The article glosses right over the obvious racial overlay briefly mentioning Rihanna's CFDA Awards outfit and Destiny's Child's megahit that earned Beyoncé a nickname for life, "Bootylicious."
Vogue's refusal to directly acknowledge women of color proved to be offensive enough for Twitter users to create a hilarious, biting hashtag: #VogueArticles.
Kanye West said it best, "Welcome to the good life! Where we like the girls who ain't on TV/Cause they got mo' (ass than the models)." Maybe Vogue isn't ready for this jelly. Check out some of Twitter's responses below.
