St. Vincent is back with "Flea," the second track released in advance of her forthcoming seventh album, All Born Screaming, due April 26.
The track has St. Vincent, real name Annie Clark, handling all the instruments save for drums and bass. Those spots of filled by Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, and Justin Meldal-Johnsen, known for his work with Beck, Paramore, Nine Inch Nails and now serving as St. Vincent's bassist, keyboardist and musical director.
The new track rocks with a quiet-loud-quiet approach, with Grohl slamming the skins through the chorus as Clarke goes off on guitar and amps up her vocal, while Meldal-Johnsen offers fuzz bass grooves. "Flea" has an industrial feel, somewhat reminiscent of classic Nine Inch Nails.
The lyric video, released simultaneously with the audio version of the track hitting streaming services, includes footage from the recording sessions for All Born Screaming.
"Flea" follows the album's first advance offering, "Broken Man," which has already garnered critical praise along with enjoying a second week as the most-added track at alternative radio.
The album is St. Vincent's first self-produced effort. Other guests include Rachel Eckroth, Josh Freese, Mark Guiliana, Cate Le Bon, Stella Mogzawa and David Ralicke.
The album's full track listing is:
