Charlie Benante revealed why he always has four kick drums whenever he plays with Pantera.
In July 2023, reports that Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown would reunite with Zakk Wylde and Benante for a world tour emerged. The four-piece will headline festivals across North America, Europe and South America while also launching their own shows.
Charlie Benante's Four Kick Drums Secret Explained
Benante spoke with What We Did On The Weekend during which he opened up about his decision not to have less than four kick drums on stage for his Pantera performances.
"If there's a fan, kid, whatever, all the way across the arena, or wherever we're playing, and he sees the drums, and it just looks massive," he explained. "So when I was younger and I would go see Van Halen, KISS, whatever, it was huge; it was larger than life. It made an impression on me. And it's kind of what I wanna do; I just wanna blow it up big."
He added, per Blabbermouth, "Darell ('Dimebag' Abbott), that was his thing: f------ blow it up. So when I had the idea to do the four kick drums, and we were, like, 'F------- leave it. It looks cool.' So that's it. I wish I had smoke coming out of my drums."
Fans have been seeing the setup again as Pantera decided to perform under the banner again after Vinnie Paul and Abbott's estates greenlit the plans.
How Charlie Benante Prepares Explore
In a separate interview with Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk, Benante spoke candidly about the preparations he went through to prepare for his live performances with Pantera.
"When I talked to Philip back in - it was, like, the end of December 2021 about this, that day, I hung up the phone and I immediately started to get my head into PANTERA mode and just figure things out," he shared. "Because I knew these songs, but I didn't know how to approach playing the songs, how I'm gonna do this."
Benante expressed his desire to play the songs "like Vinnie" so fans could close their eyes and hear the late drummer's presence through his drums.
Vinnie died on June 22, 2018, at his Las Vegas home after suffering from severe coronary artery disease, dilated cardiomyopathy and an enlarged heart.
