Glass Animals return from a two-year hiatus with a new single, "Creatures in Heaven." The gentle track is the group's latest release since a rework of their 2020 album, Dreamland. In 2022, the band earned a Grammy nomination in the Best New Artist category.
"Creatures in Heaven" reflections on a highly emotional relationship. Lead singer Dave Bayley toys with this lost love, taking the time to pose questions like, "What do you think about when you think about love?" The track nearly dashes into ballad territory, but the guitars hold their own enough to keep "Creatures in Heaven" as a firm indie-rock track.
"I don't think I realize/Just how much I miss you sometimes/We were young and so in love/We were just creatures in heaven," Bayley sings. "Creatures in Heaven" is a testament to Bayley and the group's songwriting ability, showcasing how Glass Animals can tap into the most tender of human emotions.
The instrumentation backing up the track is minimalist throughout most of the songs, but crescendos into a blast of what can only be described as the crashes of traditional indie-rock songs. With shut eyes and open ears, the "Creatures in Heaven" calls to mind Glass Animals' hit single, "Heat Waves," which sees Bayley sing, "Sometimes all I think about is you."
The music video for "Creatures in Heaven" is a visualizer taking the viewer through the galaxy. Trippy image persists throughout the video, showing glitchy diamonds and a heavenly staircase. Planets float periodically in and out of view. "Space is cool" reads the screen as "Creatures in Heaven" draws to a close.
Describing their return to releasing music, Glass Animals wrote on Instagram that "It's wonderful and like being back with the oldest of friends." The post features the cover of the group's upcoming album, I Love You So F--ing Much, and a picture of the lyrics for "Creatures in Heaven," scribbled on a piece of paper. The group's excitement for the album is nearly as palpable as that of their dedicated fans.
In an Instagram post announcing the album's release date, the band wrote of the "You" in the album's title. They described the record as one focused on love on a wider scale, not just in a romantic relationship.
"The point is that the love and human connection in the world, in all its forms, is...enormous. it's more complex and powerful than anything and everything else in the universe," read the post's caption.
A fan took to X, formerly Twitter, to wish their fellow Glass Animals enthusiasts, a "happy glass animals single release day to all who celebrate."
"I don't think you understand, I'm obsessed," reacted another user, clearly celebrating the aforementioned single release day.
Glass Animals also recently announced two shows for their upcoming tour, one performance in California and another in Mexico City. The outer space themed post reads, "Testing...1...2...3. greetings human of Earth. We've missed you, and can't wait to see you all. X."
Neither date specifies what venue the group will be playing at, and a more detailed location for the California stop has yet to be announced. As of now, the Instagram post reads "The Wild West, CA, USA," with a subtitle of "Earth." The dates of the show are being kept under wraps.
"Creatures in Heaven" is the first single off of I Love You So F-ing Much. The album is set to be released on July 19.
