Jennifer Lopez's recent flops resulted in relentless mockery against the singer-actress.
Experts, fans, and her former publicists commented on Lopez's recent "downfall" and how her recent projects -- an album, documentary, and tour -- immediately flopped. The album in question, This Is Me... Now, became her first album in 10 years, and she accompanied it with the musical film The Is Me... Now: A Love Story and Amazon Prime documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told.
She also announced her first North American tour in five years, which is scheduled to run from June through August.
Where Did It Go Wrong for Jennifer Lopez?
Following the reports about her failed projects, Lopez's former publicists and fans shared their opinions about the fiasco. Experts also weighed in on her "chaotic" retelling of her love story with her now-husband, actor Ben Affleck.
One post asked, "The rampant hate l've seen for her lately is mind-blowingly astronomical. Multiple hate videos have millions of views, and it's been going on for awhile. Her music film and documentary are getting slammed to pieces. It actually feels like irreversible damage to her brand or image. When did this negative momentum surround J.Lo? What led to it? Do you think she can repair her image?"
"I would say her downfall has been in the making for many, many years now. This lastest project of hers has just put all of that building backlash in the forefront. I think she'll be just fine image wise (but we'll see)," one commented.
Online users and Lopez's fans commented on the thread, saying the "On The Floor" singer completely failed with her documentary. Others said the whole three-part project dragged her down.
The recent commentary resonated with what Lopez's former publicist, Rob Shuter, told The New York Post in March when it became clear that This Is Me ... Now was going to underperform all of her previous releases. Now peaked at No. 38 on the Billboard Top 200; it's only her second album to not hit the Top 10, with 2007's Brave narrowly missing, at No. 12.
"Jennifer's always been a marketing and PR genius, but her biggest miscalculation here is that she thinks the world is still interested in Ben and Jennifer's love story," Shuter said. "But no one cares about Bennifer anymore. The world has moved on."
Critics also showered the projects with negative comments, with some saying they did not need to know private details about her life.
More Experts Comment on the Flop
An associate professor at West Virginia University, Elizabeth Cohen, explained to USA Today, "There's pleasure in watching rich people who seem to have it all and these (moments) remind us that, well, they really don't have it all. And maybe they don't even necessarily deserve it all."
The extent ot the album's disappointing numbers became noticeable when Lopez canceled stops on her tour, with concertgoers receiving notifications via email without an explanation. The canceled shows were initially set in Cleveland, Nashville, Raleigh, Atlanta, Tampa, New Orleans and Houston.
However, EW reported it had something to do with a "logistical issue through the promoter."
