A close friend of Amy Winehouse shared the emotional details of their last conversation before her tragic death and how she was a step away to finding true happiness.
Today, Dale Davis, a respected musician, 57, reflects on when he first met the late singer in 2003.
During their conversation, the bass player, who would go on to lead The Amy Winehouse Band, discussed the talents of the six-time Grammy award-winning artist.
Amy Winehouse Final Hours Alive
But Davis revealed the final conversation he had with Winehouse before she went to sleep and never woke up.
He told The Sun, "I talked to her at 11:30 p.m., three hours before she went to bed for the last time, and she was on good form."
"Amy said, 'Dale, I've just been watching myself on YouTube and I can sing, can't I?' I replied, 'Of course you can sing! You're the best.'"
Davis went on to say, "I'm glad she went to bed with that thought. She needed to appreciate she could sing because she was very humble."
"Even at her level, a person can never see it in themselves. They probably think, 'Is the adulation real or not?' But to me, Amy is the first star of the millennium."
Having supported her during her rise to fame, Davis claimed to hold a special place as the late singer's most cherished companion.
"When we first met, she didn't say much because she was quite an awkward character," the musician recollected.
"But when I started working with her, you could see the love in her. If she liked you, she really liked you. If she loved you, she loved you hard. She was a warm, beautiful, generous person who made me feel special right from the off."
Amy Winehouse Death
Upon reflecting on the instant he learned of Winehouse's passing, Davis mentioned that she had doubts about celebrating her upcoming birthday.
"I was out with her two nights beforehand. And she used to ring my house regularly around that time to speak to my wife (now ex-wife) and son. However, she did tell my ex that she didn't think she'd see 28."
"There's an element of Kurt Cobain in her. They both had very short careers but were massively impactful," referring the 27-year-old Nirvana front man who also died the same age as Winehouse.
"There's a certain mystery when they don't get a chance to grow old. When they're young, they chuck this massive spirit in the air and you don't see flaws so much."
In his dedication to honoring the late singer, Davis leads The Amy Winehouse Band and travels worldwide to preserve her lasting impact and meaningful legacy.
News of Davis' final conversation with Amy Winehouse comes after the debut of the biographical film "Back To Black," which delves into the troubled singer's life and features Marisa Abela in the lead role.
In July 2011, tragedy struck the music world when "Rehab" hitmaker passed away in her London home due to alcohol poisoning at the age of 27.
