Timothée Chalamet was recently spotted jamming out on the set of A Complete Unknown, the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic in which he stars as Dylan.
On April 15, fans got a glimpse of the 28-year-old and his co-star Monica Barbaro on set. Chalamet was clad in a quintessential Dylan outfit of a brown coat draped over his blue-on-blue shirt and jeans. He holds the guitar like a seasoned champion as he leans into the microphone.
A harmonica is attached to the actor's shirt, an instrument Dylan is widely known for. Chalamet resembles the actor to a T as he stands next to the microphone with Barbaro, who plays Dylan's girlfriend, Joan Baez.
Chalamet was also seen on set earlier last week, this time across from co-star Elle Fanning, who plays Sylvie Russo, one of Dylan's love interests. Other notable actors in the film include Edward Norton, Nick Offerman and Boyd Holbrook, who will all take on roles as fellow folk musicians from the New York City scene.
A Complete Unknown follows Dylan from the beginning of his career as a mere 19-year-old fresh to New York City to a bonafide folk-music superstar and world renowned artist.
Dylan is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2008, the Pulitzer Prize jury awarded the singer a special citation for his "profound impact" on American popular music and culture.
He received a presidential medal in 2012 from President Barack Obama, who said that "There is not a bigger giant in the history of American music." Dylan even won a Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016.
Given that he will be singing as Dylan, Chalamet has incredibly large shoes to fill. However, his vocal coach Eric Vetro isn't worried about the star's musical abilities.
"He's so talented that he is able to just switch into one role or the other really quickly," said Vetro of Chalamet. The A Complete Unknown actor recently starred in Wonka, with which Vetro also helped him work on his vocals. Wonka features a plethora of musical numbers that allow Chalamet to flex his singing chops.
Chalamet is currently sweeping the box office as Paul Atreides in the hit sci-fi epic Dune: Part Two. He's received wide praise for his performance.
As a graduate of LaGuardia High School of Music and Performing Arts, Chalamet has the arts ingrained in him, so his musical chops come at little surprise.
A Complete Unknown is based on Dylan Goes Electric! written by Elijah Wald. James Mangold is directing the project.
Mangold provided a synopsis of the film, which reads as follows:
"A COMPLETE UNKNOWN follows 19 year old Bob Dylan's arrival to New York City in 1961 seeking to find his hero, an ailing Woody Guthrie. He is embraced by the New York folk scene (Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Joan Baez and others) who recognize his talent. He finds gigs in downtown clubs and soon becomes a sensation, under contract at Columbia Records. The film follows Dylan's ascendance into a cultural phenomenon, his strong relationships in the folk music world and his ultimate transition away from folk music, forming a band, confusing his fans and disappointing the music community who first took him in."
A Complete Unknown is anticipated to release in theaters in 2025.
