On Monday, country music icon Garth Brooks took to his Facebook Live series, Inside Studio G, to share his feelings about a cover of his song "Friends in Low Places," performed by none other than Post Malone. The rapper and pop music hitmaker posted a video of himself playing Brooks' song on Instagram. He captioned the video, "think i'll slip on down to the oasis," adding a smiley face emoticon and tagging Brooks' account.
"This is fantastic," said Brooks as the video of Post Malone's cover played behind him. Brooks smiled and laughed throughout the performance, even throwing in a hearty shout of "woo!" at one point.
"Now he's just showing off, that's great," beamed the country singer when Post Malone hit a particularly impressive note. Brooks burst into laughter when Post Malone sang along to the guitar notes, imitating the instrument with his voice. He remarked that that's what he loves about '70s music.
"You know he's another one of those guys that when he sings, he's alive. You can tell that he just loves to do it," Brooks said once the clip, which he dubbed "awesome," finished. He claimed that he "had no idea" that Post Malone had covered the song, which Brooks originally released in 1990.
"The guy is amazing in the genre that he is, but he loves country music. I've heard it for years," continued Brooks.
Post Malone has been dipping more than one toe in the country music pond as of late. Most recently, he appeared on Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter on the song "LEVII'S JEANS." In February, the "White Iverson" singer teased a collaboration with country singer Luke Combs, which appears to be a track titled "Ain't Got a Guy for That." He also recently covered "Honky Tonk Blues," a widely popular song from Hank Williams.
In 2023, he performed Joe Diffie's "Pickup Man" with Morgan Wallen and HARDY, a country hitmaker in his own right, in 2023. The cover was released earlier this year on HARDY's album, Hixtape Vol. 3: Difftape. That same year, Post Malone hinted to Access Hollywood that he had a country music album of his own on its way.
The "Circles" singer has yet to release a fully formed country project, but its arrival feels more and more imminent as Post Malone continues to immerse himself in the country music scene.
Post Malone will also be performing at Stagecoach Festival, which some liken to a country music version of Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival. Other artists slated to perform include Morgan Wallen, Eric Church, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Miranda Lambert and many more. Stagecoach 2024 begins on Friday, April 26.
When Brooks' studiomate said that country music from Post Malone may be in the works, the "Thunder Rolls" singer responded enthusiastically.
"Really? There should be!"
