South Korean rapper, singer and producer Zico has teamed up with Jennie of hit girl group BLACKPINK for a new single: "Spot!" The song rotates between English and Korean, with the rapper and singer often switching languages in the middle of a verse.
Zico delivers snappy verses, laying down party-encouraging lines like "Send me the address (Hey)/No dress code" and "Now, hands in the air!"
Jennie shines on the chorus, singing "Mm, we're not going home tonight, alright." She continues, saying that the party is going "Up and down, round and round/Hit the spot, spot, spot, spot." Her voice is silky smooth, leaning into impressive high notes.
The artists join together in a post-chorus before linking up again on a final verse, where Zico establishes that the two are unstoppable. "We gon' run this town, that's crazy (Uh)," he raps.
"The charm of this single lies in its simple arrangement that evokes listeners' excitement and desire to have fun," said Zico of "Spot!" After finishing the track, Zico "knew it was executed to perfection without a doubt."
The music video for "Spot!" has already garnered three million views in less than six hours, thrusting it to the No. 7 spot on YouTube's trending page. The video features the two dancing, singing and rapping in various settings. While Jennie dances in a bedroom, Zico raps on a soccer field. They link up together in several scenes, such as in a recording studio, in a parking garage and at a rambunctious rooftop party.
In a press release, Zico further detailed the purpose of "Spot!" He explained that he "wanted to create a song that people can put on repeat, stripping away any unnecessary elements to emphasize the parts where I wanted to highlight most throughout the track."
"Spot!" arrives at an interesting point in Jennie's career. The track is Jennie's second collaboration and second single since she formed her own record label, Odd Atelier. Rumors swirled in March that the K-pop idol would be releasing her first solo album in the summer, but Jennie and her management quickly shut those rumors down. Jennie also made her acting debut in The Idol last year.
In March, she released "Slow Motion" with Brockhampton-alum Matt Champion.
Despite her blossoming solo career, Jennie's work on her own does not mean that BLACKPINK are finished. In fact, all four members of the global sensation renewed their contracts with YG Entertainment in December 2023. They are set to release a new album and take on a world tour.
Zico, meanwhile, has been working on a label of his own: KOZ Entertainment. He produced and signed the group Boynextdoor, who debuted on Hybe in 2023. Hybe is the massive multilabel conglomerate which is home to widely popular acts like BTS and New Jeans; the company also acquired KOZ Entertainment in 2021.
"Spot!" is Zico's first release since his 2023 single "Human." In 2022, he released the Grown Ass Kid EP.
