On Friday, supermodel Christie Brinkley made an appearance at her ex-husband Billy Joel's concert.
The Madison Square Garden performance is one of the last in Joel's monthly residency series, which concludes in July. In 2014, Joel declared that he would play one night per month at the iconic venue "as long as the demand continues." The residency has since broken several records. He headlined Madison Square Garden for the first time in 1978.
Joel and Brinkley met in 1983 while vacationing in St. Barts. Within two years, the couple married aboard a yacht in the Hudson River. Notably, the marriage was both of the couple's second trip to the altar. Both Brinkley and Joel have now had four spouses. Joel is currently married to Alexis Roderick while Brinkley is "open" to a new relationship. She divorced her most recent ex-husband, Peter Cook, in 2008, before being linked to John Mellencamp in 2015.
Brinkley and Joel share one daughter, Alexa Ray Joel, who is a singer, songwriter and pianist. The couple divorced in 1994. However, the two are clearly at peace with each other based upon this weekend's concert experience.
While Joel sang the chorus, Brinkley swayed back and forth in the crowd. A giant smile stretched across her face as she bobbed up and down to the track.
"Uptown girl/She's my uptown girl," sang Joel as the blonde model moved and grooved in a blue ensemble.
A TikTokker captured the sweet moment on camera, writing over the video "Billy Joel wrote 'Uptown Girl' about his then-partner Christie Brinkley. Tonight she watched him sing the song he wrote about her to all of Madison Square Garden." The venue, which has sold out for every Joel show since he began his residency, has a capacity of nearly 20,000.
The user captioned the video with less endearing words: "40 years later and your ex man is still grinning at you like that while he sings the song he wrote about how rich and hot you are? Voodoo clam." The "Voodoo clam" comment is a crude reference describing a woman who is particularly skilled in the bedroom.
"Christie Brinkley is sunshine in human form," wrote one commenter of the model. Given Brinkley's shiny smile and bright blonde hair, the comparison comes at no surprise.
"They have a great post divorce relationship. He goes to her Xmas parties and plays piano and all the guests sing along," said another TikTok user.
The Sports Illustrated cover star also starred in the music video for "Uptown Girl." The video follows Joel as a mechanic while Brinkley, the "uptown girl" in question, rides in on a Rolls-Royce. The two take off on a motorcycle as the video draws to a close.
Brinkley danced away to "Uptown Girl," celebrating the track that Joel wrote about her (and ex-girlfriend Elle Macpherson) so many years ago. The track was originally titled "Uptown Girls" until Joel shifted the focus from Macpherson, Whitney Houston and Brinkley to only Brinkley. The irresistible song, which has sold over 1.3 million copies since its release in 1983, is one of the most renowned pop-rock tracks of the past 40 years.
