Cher is certainly getting her flowers this year. The megastar received the Icon Award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards in April, and it was recently revealed that she will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in October.
She's also, presumably, getting literal flowers from her boyfriend, music executive Alexander "A.E." Edwards. The two met at Paris Fashion Week in 2022 and have been Instagram official since November of that year. But because people often feel the need to bring up their 40-year age gap, Cher decided to give Jennifer Hudson her two-fold reason for why she dates younger men.
"I'm really shy when I'm not working," Cher said during a prerecorded interview that aired today on The Jennifer Hudson Show, which they filmed the day Hudson presented Cher with her Icon Award. "And I'm kind of shy around men."
Because of this, she's not one to make the first move.
"The reason I got with young men was because men my age or older -- well, now they're all dead -- they were always terrified to approach me," the 77-year-old joked. "And younger men were the only ones [who did]."
This isn't the first time Cher has said that older men don't seem that into her.
"The truth was if I hadn't gone out with younger men, I would have never had a date," Cher told People in 2021 of her penchant for dating people decades younger than herself. "Younger men weren't intimidated by older women. But older men in my age category, they weren't having it."
"Older men just do not like me," she reiterated to "Chicken Shop Date" host Amelia Dimoldenberg last December. During that interview, she also added that she thinks all women should "go out with a younger man" at least once.
Cher has long been vocal about her sometimes unconventional views on men and relationships. In an oft-referenced 1996 Dateline interview with Jane Pauley, the newswoman brought up a quip of hers.
"You've said, 'A man is not a necessity, a man is a luxury," Pauley stated.
"Like a dessert, yeah," Cher responded, "A man is absolutely not a necessity."
When Pauley questioned if Cher meant that to sound mean and bitter, the "Believe" singer was adamant that it was said both sincerely and in jest.
"Not at all! I adore dessert," she said with a laugh. "I love men. I think men are the coolest, but you don't really need them to live."
She then followed this with one of her most famous quips: "My mom said to me, 'You know, sweetheart, you should settle down and marry a rich man.' And I said, 'Mom, I am a rich man.'"
"My experience with men is great because I pick them because I like them," Cher continued. "I don't need them."
