Dua Lipa, the Grammy-winning sensation, has weathered storms of criticism since her meteoric rise in the music industry, emerging resilient despite the vitriol.
From triumphs to controversies, she shared her journey of resilience and defiance against naysayers, unveiling her secret to turning criticism into fuel for succes.
Dua Lipa Experienced Vitriol After Winning the Grammy for Best New Artist
Speaking to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1, the "Houdini" singer shared how she learned to manage critics and haters throughout the years.
"I think everything comes in stages and waves," she confessed. "There can be a moment where people really love you and you feel so supported and you're like, 'Oh, this is great.' Especially in the beginning. I was doing interviews and people were like, 'How do you deal with hate?' And I'm like, 'I don't get any hate. It's great.' And then that changed really quickly."
Social media hailed Lipa for defying the Grammy Best New Artist curse when her sensational Future Nostalgia album earned overwhelming reviews from critics and fans. However, her success did not stop people from criticizing her, specifically when the "Go Girl Give Us Nothing" meme went viral.
Lipa won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist in 2019 and the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for "Electricity" with Silk City. While she said receiving the award was a huge honor, she also experienced heavy criticism, questioning her win.
"There was people online being like, 'She's not deserving of it. She's got no stage presence. She can't do this. She's not well- equipped to, she's not even ... She won't be here next year,'" Lipa recalled. "There was a lot of that. That fueled me in a way."
Dua Lipa Steps Back When Hearing Criticism
In the Apple Music interview, Lipa admitted that when hearing criticism, instead of using it as "revenge," she takes a "step back" instead.
"I just go, 'OK, all of this is background noise and I should just stick on my path," she added. "Because every time someone has doubted me, I've proved them wrong. And for me, I'm like, this is fueling me. This is pushing me to be better, to work hard. And I get a real kick out of proving people wrong."
Lipa is releasing her highly-awaited third album, Radical Optimism, on May 3, 2024.
