Sabrina Carpenter is working late... because she's a singer on Saturday Night Live.
The "Espresso" breakout star has been announced as the musical guest for the season finale of Saturday Night Live, alongside actor Jake Gyllenhaal as host. The final episode of the hit variety show's 49th season will air on May 18.
A week prior, Vampire Weekend will be appearing as the musical guest for the penultimate episode, featuring former cast member Maya Rudolph as host. This weekend's episode is set to feature Dua Lipa celebrating her Radical Optimism release when she pulls double duty as both host and musical guest.
Carpenter's placement in the coveted finale episode comes just after she scored her first Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Espresso." Released before her lauded Coachella set, the single has been going viral on social media for being a total earworm, with many preparing for it to be the "Song of the Summer."
However, several eagle-eyed Swifties could not help but point out that the singer, who just wrapped up a stint opening for Taylor Swift on some international Eras Tour concerts, would be appearing alongside her ex, Gyllenhaal.
Gyllenhaal and Swift's relationship serves as much of the inspiration for her hit album Red, which includes the seminal track "All Too Well." Upon the release of "Taylor's Version" of the record, their 2010 fling was once again a viral topic of conversation.
As Carpenter and Swift have seemed to have grown a strong friendship after their Eras Tour stops, many fans poked fun at the fact that she would now be in the same episode as her former beau.
"She needs to perform 'Espresso (10 Minutes Version) (Sabrina's Version) (From the Vault)," one X, formerly Twitter, user posted.
Another Swiftie jokingly refused to acknowledge that Gyllenhaal would be appearing at all, saying that it's "weird how sabrina is going to be a musical guest on a snl episode with no host."
"Guys [be f-ing for real], Sabrina wouldn't turn down SNL just bc she has to do it with Taylor's ex," another user argued. "Touch grass. That's a massive opportunity for her."
The announcement comes after some Swifties say that Carpenter "betrayed" the "Cruel Summer" singer when she took part in a campaign for Kim Kardashian's Skims. Swift and Kardashian have been notably entangled in a public feud for years, with the Grammy-winner even dedicating a new song on her Tortured Poets Department album to the reality star.
To celebrate the big news, Carpenter sent an emotional email to her fans, recognizing the honor of taking on the slot for the season finale. She reveals that performing on the program has been a massive dream for her throughout her career.
"I can't believe how long some of you have stuck by me, and I've been so emo thinking about our journey latelyyyy," she started. "Wanted to send this note today because I found out I'm doing something that I've written in my dream journal for years... I'm performing on the season finale of SNL!!!"
