Radio host and internet personality DJ Akademiks is being sued for rape, sexual assault and defamation by Fauziya Abashe.
The woman met Akademiks online in 2021 and had a brief relationship. She was later invited to his house in New Jersey the following year.
She alleges that two men, who were not named, met her when she arrived at the house. Abashe claims that they drugged her drink before assaulting and raping her on Akademiks' pool deck. She reportedly lost consciousness from the drugs and her memory was "impacted."
Abashe later woke around 4 a.m. in Akademiks' bed where he was "pulling her hair, prying open her legs, and brutally raping her." She reported "begging" the podcaster to stop while she was "crying" and unable to "move physically."
The day after the assault, Abashe inquired with Akademiks about what occurred the night before. He reportedly then showed her two condom wrappers in a trash can as well as surveillance footage of her being raped on the pool deck.
Per the lawsuit, "According to Ms. Abashe, as she watched the video, she looked like she was just lying there lifeless, which did not sit right with her."
Akademiks also texted her to get tested for sexually transmitted infections, implying that he had unprotected intercourse with her the previous night.
Abashe hired an attorney, who advised her to have a rape kit performed. The kit reportedly showed traces of Akademiks' sperm. She also had her bruises, which were found on her arm, back, buttocks and legs, photographed.
She called Akademiks on a "record wire call" where he admitted to "having sexual intercourse" with Abashe. He "graphically recount[ed]" the incident, including details about Abashe's genitalia.
Abashe initially addressed the situation on social media last year, which led her to press charges this year.
Akademiks countered Abashe's initial accusations in 2023 by claiming that she willingly participated in sex with the two men. He alleges he did not have sex with Abashe. He described Abashe's alleged rape as her "getting trained by my two mens on the pool deck" while he was asleep.
The suit accuses Akademiks of defaming Abashe with this statement by "accusing her of voluntarily having an orgy with his friends at his home while maintaining that he never participated at all." Abashe and her team allege that this statement is defamatory, "misleading and false" as Akademiks had texts from Abashe where she said that she did not know what was done to her on the night of the assault.
Tyrone Blackburn, Abashe's attorney, stated that Abashe was "left no choice other than to file" suit after "several unsuccessful attempts" to handle the case privately.
"I'm confident that justice will prevail, and the veil will be removed so no other woman will have to endure what I did," Abashe said of her suit.
