Elle King revealed details about her well-known tipsy show at the Grand Ole Opry during a birthday celebration for Dolly Parton, sparking a whirlwind of reactions.
As a key performer in Parton's birthday festivities at the Nashville venue, the 34-year-old country star took the stage even though the iconic 78-year-old singer was not present.
During the show, her speech became increasingly unclear, indicating that she was "hammered." Not until much later did King dive into her struggles with a deeply personal issue on the Dear Chelsea podcast hosted by Chelsea Handler.
In a rare moment of candor, she opened up about a past mistake that had been weighing on her conscience for quite some time, per TMZ.
"I not only did I cuss on stage, hammered, at the Grand Ole Opry, but it was Dolly Parton's birthday and the Opry was doing a Dolly Parton tribute."
After a significant event, the "Jersey Giant" singer chose to stay silent for the past five months, emphasizing the need to take a break and unwind before addressing the situation.
Revealing the gravity of the circumstance, King shared, "I had been going through something very heavy and traumatic in my life at the time."
She added, "That day was a really big day dealing with what I was going through and am still going through, and I suffer from severe PTSD."
"That day, I hadn't eaten, hadn't slept in days and I was really overwhelmed. I was like a shell of myself."
During her retelling, it was mentioned that two distinct performances were scheduled for that day. Unexpectedly, a heavy snowstorm hit, resulting in the initial headliner canceling their appearance. King was asked to step up and take the stage in a pinch.
"They asked me if I would sing-if I would be the headliner and sing Jolene. I was like, "Great, I know that song."
The "America's Sweetheart" singer "f----ng perfect," though she confessed to taking "one shot too many and I'm just not there, in my body.
"I don't even remember what I said."
"I got the curtain dropped on me, and I was totally 100% disassociated, and I just cut to the dressing room-me on the floor just sobbing, like, 'What have I done?' she said, adding the next day it was, 'everywhere,' and she was 'mortified.'"
In a heartfelt gesture, King penned a handwritten apology letter for both the Grand Ole Opry and Parton. Shortly after, a call from Parton herself came through, with the country legend describing Parton as "living proof that angels walk among us."
King confessed, "That's the stuff that I received that I'll never forget because I wanted to f-----g die and I had to remove myself from the population for a while."
Following the unfortunate incident, she decided to temporarily step away from her tour for two months. It was only after this break that she expressed her thoughts and feelings in a message posted on Instagram in March.
"To everyone sending me love, because I'm human and already talked to Dolly. I love you. To everyone who told me to kill myself, I love you too."
