The family of a young Swiftie is at the center of weighty criticism after listing a special hat signed by Taylor Swift for a whopping $20,000.
The hat is a key part of the singer's Red set during the Eras Tour. She selects one lucky fan to receive a signed hat, which matches the one that she donned for the "22" music video in 2013. Swift frequently selects a younger audience member for the special honor.
Jeana Linzy, who attended Swift's show at MetLife Stadium, took it upon herself to put her sister's "22" hat up for sale on eBay. The listing, titled "Taylor Swifts Worn On Stage 22 Eras Tour Signed Hat From Met Life Stadium," claims that the money earned from the sale will go "Towards Her Collage [sic] Fund."
Bidding for the coveted hat began at a cool $20,000, with another $6.33 tacked on for shipping costs. Fans initially believed the sale was a scam and that the user responsible for the listing wasn't actually related to Linzy. After Swifties flooded her social media DMs, Linzy made a statement, writing "Yes, that is our listing. Thank you."
Many Swifties on X were quick to criticize Linzy for listing such a special item, but others conceded that the cost of higher education would make the sale worth it. However, after a bit of deep-digging from social media users, Linzy and her family were exposed for being "insanely wealthy and just greedy," per one Swiftie on X.
"They have multiple luxury cars and designer everything. What a damn shame Taylor gave the hat to them," she continued.
The same X user, who herself was gifted a signed "22" hat at Swift's Denver show, wrote that the listing made her "so mad I could bust through a wall like the kool-aid man."
Other netizens were quick to find more photos that show Linzy flexing multiple Mercedes Benz cars, pairs of Christian Louboutins and stacks of Louis Vuitton boxes.
Swifties also expressed sympathy for Linzy's sister, believing that she had no say in the hat's sale. However, one user found out that this wasn't quite the case. A screenshot of their DMs shows the Swiftie telling the eBay user that she should "be ashamed" of herself for selling the hat.
The user, the hat-receiver's mother, wrote back, clarifying that this was her youngest daughter's choice:
"This was her choice to sell this and if she decides she don't want to sell it the listing will be took down I honor my kids decisions so even if she don't go to college she can use this money for a head start in her life and or business that she chooses."
The listing has since been removed.
While there are no other signed "22" hats up for auction, several cowboy hats signed by Swift are up for sale, ranging from $1,499.99 to $20,000.
