Hip-hop fans in the know have been waiting for Dr. Dre's new album for, oh, 15 years or so at this point. The emcee/entrepreneur first announced that work had begun on Detox, which would be his third and final album as a rapper. Initial reports suggested a 2005 release. Then Snoop Dogg said it was done during 2008. Then it was to be released during 2010. Needless to say, none of these things have come to fruition. The album still sits without a formal release date today. The most recent update on Detox is that it won't be called Detox at all.
"He scrapped Detox a couple of years ago and came up with another title," said Aftermath producer Dawaun Parker during a podcast. "I won't say what the title is because I haven't seen that online or nothing yet."
Probably a wise move on the part of Parker, who was appearing on the "Shots Fired" podcast of fellow hip-hoppers Jeff Weiss and MC Nocando (which you can watch below), lest he want Dre to crush his skull.
Dre has largely avoided the crap Axl Rose got for the long-delayed Guns 'n' Roses album Chinese Democracy because the former N.W.A. member has found other successful projects to fill his time. You may have heard, for example, that he recently earned nearly a billion dollars for his Beats company getting acquired by Apple. Or, you know, sometimes he produces for performers such as Eminem and Kendrick Lamar.
Anyway we'll be lucky to even get the title of the new Dr. Dre album within the next year, much less a record itself. He should consider picking up the pace however. As Rose can attest, long waits don't make people appreciate the product any more.
