Taylor Swift may not love all her eras equally.
As her blockbuster concert tour rages on throughout Europe, Swifties are convinced that the Grammy-winner might not be as fond of her Evermore era.
Popular X social media account @tswifterastour has amassed over 600k followers as they share live updates of each performance of the Eras Tour. From costume changes to what surprise songs are being performed, they encourage fans of the "Cruel Summer" singer to turn on notifications for their posts to be the first to know what's going on at the concert.
Recently, the hardworking stan account has started tracking what Swift says about her ninth studio album at every show after a years-long saga among the fandom continues to fester.
Speculation that Swift disliked the album - which surprise dropped in December of 2020, a few months after her acclaimed Folklore album - started when its promotional rollout was significantly less prominent than its preceding sister album, Folklore. After a few social media posts, Swift quickly moved on to promoting her re-recorded Fearless LP, without giving Evermore the same treatment as Folklore, which received a Disney+ concert special and several vinyl variants.
When Evermore was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2022 Grammys, Swift did not attend. The year prior, she had attended, performed a three-song mashup, and accepted Folklore's Album of the Year win.
Jokes that the 34-year-old disliked that album began to spread throughout the Swiftie community, becoming a running joke among fans throughout years of Evermore collecting dust as the singer moved onto her multiple Taylor's Versions and Midnights.
One year ago, Swift attempted to set the record straight during an early performance of the tour. She admits to keeping up with her adoring fans online, stating that they have a "really good sense of humor" and "like to tease her about things." One of the running bits she caught onto was the speculation that she "hates Evermore," which she vehemently shut down.
"What is your evidence? I would like to see your evidence," she laughed. "You guys were like, 'She did not wish Evermore a happy birthday.' I don't even wish people a happy birthday on social media. But I'm here to dispel the rumors and prove wrong the allegations that I hate Evermore because I actually love that album."
The speech did not dispel the rumors. In fact, it further fueled Swifties to examine each word that Swift says about the album under a microscope.
Perhaps the biggest piece of evidence that fans present about her distaste of the album is that the Evermore section of the Eras Tour was cut out from the setlist, making way for The Tortured Poets Department. Instead of having its own spotlight after Fearless, Swift now performs "Willow," "Champagne Problems," and "Marjorie" later on in the show during a combined Folklore set.
When the new section debuted, Swift explained that she wanted to fuse the sister albums into "one chapter." However, a set that once boasted a prominent five songs was reduced to three, as opposed to Folklore's five tracks in the show.
Now, as the "Tolerate It" singer sits down at her piano to make her long-awaited "Champagne Problems" speech, fans claim that she "struggles" to even mention Evermore. They claim that Swift is unable to mention the Grammy-nominated LP without also mentioning its Grammy-winning sister. For example, she recently shared that Folklore "is always going to be one of her favorite albums." As for Evermore, she merely referred to it as "Folklore's sister" with no additional praise.
On Monday, June 3, the account rejoiced when celebrating a "huge milestone" during Swift's concert in Lyon, France. They joke that she overcame her "inner hatred" and "praised" Evermore by saying that she is "so proud of" it. Other fans celebrated the breakthrough in the replies section.
"This must have been so hard for her," one fan said, with a response saying that "it took everything in her not to throw up on that stage saying the words 'evermore' and 'proud' in the same sentence."
"Always a sister album never 'my beloved career highlight'," another critic pointed out.
No matter how many times Swift addresses the matter, Evermore stans may never be fully convinced that Swift truly enjoys her work on the album. But one thing is clear: a record that includes career highlights like "'Tis the Damn Season" and "Right Where You Left Me" deserves recognition, no matter who it is coming from.
