One Direction became one of the most popular boy bands of all time after being formed on The X Factor UK in 2010, and 14 years after they became a massive pop culture phenomenon, Simon Cowell is looking for another group that will rise to fame.
According to Rolling Stone, the famous TV judge will hold auditions to scout for the next big boy band, and it will be filmed to be featured in a "potential documentary series."
"Every generation deserves a megastar boyband and I don't think there has been one to have the success of One Direction in over 14 years," Cowell said in a statement, adding that the music industry tends to focus on solo musicians.
"it usually takes someone from outside to put a group together," he added.
The upcoming documentary will be produced by Box to Box Films, which is popularly known for producing Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix.
However, a streaming platform for Cowell's boy band hunt has yet to be announced.
Auditions will take place in various cities in the United Kingdom, including Liverpool, Dublin, Newcastle, and London.
In the statement, Cowell noted that holding auditions like this could be risky, as he's also afraid that no one will show up.
"There's always a high degree of risk, and I genuinely have no idea what's going to happen! We might uncover an incredible group; we might not get there," he said.
Even though the future is uncertain, the manager is excited. He added, "There is no guaranteed path to success-anything can happen, but that's what's exciting for me, and that's why I'm doing this."
In addition to One Direction, Simon Cowell has been involved with the formation of other popular musical groups like Fifth Harmony, Little Mix, CNCO, and PrettyMuch.
Simon Cowell might be credited for some of the success of the groups he helped create, but some people accused him of maltreatment.
In early reports, twins John and Edward Grimes, also known as the duo Jedward, accused the entertainment mogul in a series of rants.
"Simon Cowell thinks he's the Mafia leader of the music industry when in reality he's nothing but a bad facelift," the pair wrote on X in 2021.
The twins further alleged that One Direction and Little Mix are "legally f***ed in contracts," and they are not allowed to speak about their issues.
"We have 1D's contract which was sent to use by mistake cuz we had the same label! Same management! Same security and accountants! Legally posting contracts online is gonna end up in court but we've known for many years the situation! Niall! Liam! Louis! Zayn! Harry! You're survivors," they added.
