The thought of Jennifer Lopez leaving him might not be sitting well with Ben Affleck, which can turn to his notorious drinking habits.
According to sources who spoke with Daily Mail, close pals of the Gone Girl star have revealed that he is grappling with intense feelings of "acute sadness" due to the breakdown of his marriage while also grappling with long-standing struggles with alcoholism and gambling addiction.
Affleck initially decided to quit drinking in 1997, marking the start of his journey towards sobriety.
He told a reporter at the time via Fox News, "I just wanted to stop. I started regretting some things I did when I was drunk."
Affleck added, "It's funny to be obnoxious or out of control, but then it's like, 'I think I hurt that person's feelings, 'I made a fool of myself' or 'I didn't want to kiss that girl.' I have almost no inhibitions, so it's dangerous for me."
In 2001, seeking professional help for alcoholism marked a significant step in his recovery journey. Following this, the Good Will Hunting star underwent multiple rehab programs, including stays in 2017 and 2018, to continue working on his goals of maintaining sobriety.
Now, it has been suggested that the 51-year-old actor is in a risky position of potentially falling off the wagon with his previous struggles or may have already relapsed into alcohol consumption due to his alleged marriage issues.
One source told the outlet, "I hear that he is drinking. He is full of demons - a really troubled person."
"I have seen him looking glassy-eyed, and it is a real worry to everyone who cares about him," a second insider revealed.
Guadalupe Rodriguez, Lopez's mother, has apparently shifted her opinion on her son-in-law, going from supporting the revival of the Bennifer romance in 2022 to now opposing it.
This comes after Affleck and Lopez were seen together at the lavish $60 million mansion they once called home, boasting 12 bedrooms and 24 bathrooms. The couple have decided to put it up on sale, further intensifying divorce rumors.
Affleck is currently renting out a $100,000-per-month home in Brentwood since May, while Lopez decided to call off her entire summer tour to allegedly save their marriage.
According to another source who spoke to the outlet, it is known that Affleck has mentally disengaged from the marriage, yet Lopez has not come to terms with this reality.
They explained that the "Jenny From the Block" singer remains hopeful that they could possibly reconcile and mend their relationship through counseling.
The insider added, "It is made all the more difficult by the fact that we are dealing here with the emotions of the five children they have between them."
"The reasons why it hasn't worked out are many but when you lose [Lopez's] family, you lose [Lopez]. Her mom and her sisters are against him and Benny [Medina] is also."
