Nick Jonas and Adrienne Warren have landed the leading roles in The Last Five Years, an upcoming Broadway production scheduled for spring 2025.
Director Whitney White, a distinguished Tony Award nominee known for her work on Jaja's African Hair Braiding, is overseeing the revival of this musical featuring its iconic score and book by Jason Robert Brown.
The Last Five Years graced Off-Broadway stages in 2002 and again in 2013 before being adapted into a movie. It first debut in 2001.
In The Last Five Years, audiences follow the journey of two New York City residents-Jamie, a hopeful writer, and Cathy, a budding actress-as they navigate the highs and lows of their love story over the last five years, recounting their experiences from different points in time.
According to Deadline, Brown stated, "I have always believed that when the time was right, The Last Five Years would make its way to Broadway."
To have [Jonas] and [Warren] taking on these roles is a composer's dream come true, and to have Whitney's extraordinary guidance and vision is the hope of every playwright. It has taken twenty-five years, but the time is right."
Meanwhile, White commented to Playbill, "The Last Five Years is one of the greatest original American musicals in the canon. I could not be more excited to bring it to Broadway for the first time with Nick and Adrienne, two powerhouse performers and lovers of theatre."
"I fell in love with this musical many years ago when I was a student at Northwestern. I found it then, and still consider The Last Five Years to be such a human portrait and a beautiful exercise in making time-the one thing we are all bound to-feel consequential."
"I think we all understand how hard it is to leave something behind; a lover, a job, a country, a relationship that doesn't serve you anymore. But for me, the heartbreak at the center of the show walks hand in hand with abundant love and possibility. I know that audiences will be blown away, once again, by the brilliance of Jason Robert Brown's one-of-a-kind composition, orchestration and musical vision, and that they will see themselves in Jamie and Cathy-two young people trying to figure it all out."
Transitioning beyond his success with the Jonas Brothers, Jonas embarked on Broadway with How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 2012, succeeding Daniel Radcliffe for a period. Earlier, he showcased his talent in productions like Les Misérables, Beauty and the Beast, and Annie Get Your Gun.
This comes after the Jonas Brothers recently went on tour scheduled through 2024, including notable stops on Broadway along the way.
Meanwhile, receiving critical acclaim, Warren showcased her talent in Tina: The Tina Turner Musical, earning a Tony Award. Her remarkable performances earned her a Tony nomination in Shuffle Along, where she starred alongside Audra McDonald. Making an impressive Broadway debut in Bring It On in 2012, Warren has since expanded her repertoire to include various movie and television projects.
