It totally skipped our mind Wednesday when we were reporting on Madison Square Garden's calendar for New Year's Eve what it meant that Diplo and Skrillex would be holding down the venue: Where was Phish gonna do its annual New Year's Eve revue? The good news is that the band found a new gig but the bad news (for us locals) is that it will be a long way from New York City, according to Billboard.
Trey Anastasio and company will bring their jams to Miami to ring in the new year, playing a December 31 gig at American Airlines Arena (and staying in town for three more dates at the arena through January 3). The concert run will mark the end of Phish's current tour in support of its new album Fuego, which will begin mid-October out in Oregon.
Phish had celebrated the new year at Madison Square Garden for four straight years through 2013 before Diplo and Skrillex were announced as the headliners this year. No word yet on whether it was ultimately Phish's idea of the venue's choice for the band to move on, but the group was certainly bringing in the crowds so we know selling tickets wasn't the issue. Miami isn't exactly new terrain for the band: Phish was playing at American Airlines Arena at the opening of both 2009 and 2003.
As you know, Phish is incapable of playing the same set twice so four-day passes will be available in limited quantities for those Florida fans who don't have plans...like any plans...over that four-night stretch.
