Prince was offered to have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame twice while he was still alive, but he rejected both chances.
On Tuesday, June 25, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced the list of the honorees for the Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2025. The late "Play in the Sunshine" singer is among the recipients, alongside Keith Urban, Jane Fonda, David Beckham and more.
"The Walk of Fame has made history again! As Chairman of the Walk of Fame Selection Committee, I am thrilled to announce the distinguished honorees who will grace the iconic Walk of Fame in the Class of 2025. Each honoree truly embodies the essence of excellence in their respective fields," said Peter Roth in a statement. "The committee and I cannot wait to see our honorees becoming part of this world-famous walkway!"
Before the posthumous honor, Prince was offered the star but turned it down twice.
The "When Doves Cry" singer's name appeared on the nominees' list in the 1990s and around 2014 or 2015.
Producer of the Walk of Fame ceremonies Ana Martinez told The Wrap, "He was on my wish list. But he felt that it wasn't the right time."
However, Prince was not able to prepare himself to receive the honor as he died on April 21, 2016.
Still, the Walk of Fame can grant a star posthumously five years after a performer's death. In Prince's part, he will get his star over eight years after his passing.
While an official date for Prince's induction has not yet been set, Martinez clarified that Prince's family and estate have two years to schedule the ceremony before the offer expires.
Prince died at the age of 57. He was found alone and unresponsive in an elevator at his Paisley Park studio compound, his representative told Los Angeles TV station KTLA.
The Carver County Sheriff's Office, whose deputies responded to a medical call at the time, said, "They found an unresponsive adult male in the elevator. First responders attempted to provide lifesaving CPR, but were unable to revive the victim. He was pronounced deceased at 10:07 am."
Carver County Attorney Mark Metz said at a news conference in Chaska that Prince died after taking a painkiller that was laced with fentanyl. The authorities assumed he thought the drug was Vicodin, and Prince ended up getting killed following an accidental overdose.
