The city of Gelsenkirchen has taken on a temporary new identity as Swiftkirchen, in anticipation of Taylor Swift's upcoming three sold-out performances later this month.
Mayor Karin Welgen made the announcement ahead of the singer's arrival on Wednesday, July 17, emphasizing the excitement surrounding Swift's visit to their city.
"As mayor, I am of course very happy that Taylor Swift, currently the most successful singer in the world, will be performing three times in Gelsenkirchen. International attention will therefore be back on our city immediately after EURO 2024," the mayor said.
In a show of enthusiasm, fans have already begun gathering next to the newly installed Swiftkirchen city sign to celebrate this momentous occasion.
The niceties do not end here.
Head of the city's public relations department, Markus Schwardtmann also shared, "Today is the starting signal. We will be installing many more signs in highly frequented places in Gelsenkirchen in the coming days. There will be many small and large surprises so that the Swifties in Gelsenkirchen have a lot to discover."
In another recent news involving Swifties in Germany, the Church of the Holy Spirit, a centuries-old landmark in Heidelberg, Germany, housed within a historic 600-year-old building, recently hosted worship services featuring music by Taylor Swift, drawing more than 1,200 attendees.
According to Deutsche Welle, the service titled "Anti-Hero - Taylor Swift Church Service" was a deliberate attempt to engage the interest of young people.
Pastor Christof Ellsiepen explained to the outlet, "The Church of the Holy Spirit has always been a place of encounter and exchange. That's why a pop music religious service fits so perfectly. With it, we're giving space to the questions and issues that occupy the younger generation."
The event not only showcased the church's adaptability but also underscored its commitment to remaining relevant and inclusive within the community.
Taylor Swift is widely acclaimed as the foremost pop star in the world today. With a massive global fan base and consistently sold-out performances, few artists rival her influence.
In 2023, Swift achieved billionaire status due to her substantial earnings and currently holds an estimated net worth of $1.3 billion. Notably, her Eras Tour has significantly contributed to her wealth, marking a historic milestone as the highest-grossing tour ever, surpassing $1 billion in revenue-the first of its kind in history.
The Eras Tour spans 152 concerts across five continents, projecting Taylor Swift to potentially earn over $2 billion from ticket sales alone.
Including additional revenue streams like merchandise, her total income from the tour is speculated to exceed $4.1 billion, according to a report from the Washington Post.
