Katy Perry is the headline act for the 2024 AFL Grand Final in September. Unfortunately, not everybody is on board with the idea.

A number of Americans expressed confusion and disbelief over the announcement, suggesting that the performance was a downgrade for the "I Kissed A Girl" singer. Some even considered dismissing the Grand Final as a made-up event.

The Australian Football League (AFL) -- described as "the pre-eminent and only fully professional competition of Australian rules football" -- made the announcement Wednesday via X, formerly Twitter, accompanied by a promotional image of Perry showcasing an AFL ball.

Social media wasted no time mocking or expressing their confusion over the announcement.

"She's headlining a car dealership sales event? She is down baaaad," @scoobertussy said on X.

"I googled the event and STILL think they made it up. How's that possible?" @neckinhalf wrote.

A critic, @arianaunext, pointed out the underwhelming quality of Perry's latest songs, including the track, "Woman's World," writing: "She will be performing all her songs prior to 2018 because the general public doesn't know anything recent."

"AFL always keen to jump on a star at their lowest ebb," @Blaggut tweeted, while @lapeurs claimed, "She wont have another [Super Bowl] moment again."

"Gaga = Olympics. Katy = unknown made-up event," @MrPopOfficial wrote, noting that Perry's fellow pop star is set to perform at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony Friday.

In her statement Thursday, Perry expressed her joy over coming back to Australia, confirming the news.

"I'm so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at the @telstra Pre-Game Entertainment for the 2024 Toyota @AFL Grand Final. See you in September Oy Oy Oy," she wrote.

Perry's return to the spotlight has brought forth a new chapter marked by the debut of her controversial song, "Woman's World."

The song sparked a wave of scrutiny following its release, mainly due to her collaboration with Dr. Luke -- who was accused by Kesha of sexual misconduct -- on what was intended to be an empowering feminist statement.

Since the release, numerous disappointed and doubtful fans have made their sentiments known. The impact is evident in the statistics, with Perry's debut landing in the top 70 on Billboard.

This performance contrasts starkly with her previous successes, leading to concerns about the current state of her career.

According to an unnamed insider who spoke to the Daily Mail, the 39-year-old artist is facing challenges and experiencing a decline in her career.

"Katy is freaking out right now because she is very aware of the feedback that 'Woman's World' is getting. She is pointing the fingers at everyone but herself, but it is her own fault," the source claimed.

"She was insane to think that Dr. Luke was a good idea," they added. "She didn't listen to anyone. Instead of diving deep and creating art she put something out that sounded like it could have been on an album of hers from 2010."
