Sinead O'Connor's cause of death has finally been revealed, exactly one year after she was found unresponsive in her London residence and declared dead.
The Irish Independent reported that the Irish singer-songwriter died from asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
O'Connor's death certificate listed her death as a result of "exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection," according to the outlet.
On Wednesday, O'Connor's death was formally registered by her former husband, John Reynolds, in Lambeth, London.
According to the Irish Independent, Inner South London senior coroner Julian Morris certified the artist's death after a post-mortem examination.
O'Connor was 56 years old when she passed away in London on July 26, 2023.
At the time, the Coroner Court's website said that no medical cause of death was given. A Scotland Yard official told People shortly after her death that her passing was "not being treated as suspicious."
The London Inner South Coroner's Court later said in a statement that O'Connor passed away from natural causes and that it had ceased involvement in her death.
The Irish singer struggled with mental health issues throughout her life, including depression, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts.
The musician is survived by her three living children. Shane, her 17-year-old son, died by apparent suicide in 2022.
O'Connor released her debut album, "The Lion and the Cobra," in 1987, featuring the alt radio hits "Mandinka" and "I Want Your (Hands On Me)," followed by her 1990 masterpiece, "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got." The album's follow-up had her worldwide breakout single, the Prince-penned No. 1 smash hit, "Nothing Compares 2 U," along with timeless hits like "The Emperor's New Clothes" and the mesmerizing "I Am Stretched on Your Grave."
