Britney Spears Biopic Based on 'The Woman In Me' Memoir in the Works: Here's What We Know

Britney Spears' story will be made into a movie.

On Thursday, Universal Pictures announced that it has acquired the rights to the pop superstar's best-selling 2023 book, "The Woman in Me" and will develop a biopic based on it, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Britney Spears biopic will be directed by Jon M. Chu, who is preparing for the November premiere of his much-awaited film "Wicked," starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Universal confirmed that Marc Platt will produce.

On the same day, Spears teased the movie by writing on X, formerly Twitter, that she was "excited to share" with fans "a secret project" she has been working on with Platt.

"He's always made my favorite movies ... stay tuned," she wrote.

No other detail about the production, including the cast and premiere date, has been announced as of this writing.

In November 2023, Spears took to X to thank fans after "The Woman In Me" sold 1.1 million copies in its first week and hit No. 1 on The New York Times' best-seller list.

"Thank you to all the fans who made #TheWomanInMe a #1 @nytimes bestseller," the singer tweeted. "It is quite meaningful to me! I adore you all [three kisses emojis]!"

The book tells the story of Spears' rise to stardom, her past relationship with Justin Timberlake -- including her allegedly becoming pregnant and getting an abortion while they were dating -- and her 13-year conservatorship.

The "Toxic" hitmaker shared in the memoir that she "went from partying a lot to being a total monk" after she was placed under her father's control.

Spears also claimed that security guards would hand her "prepackaged envelopes" of medications, watch her take them, and "put parental controls" on her iPhone.

Music biopics like Spears' upcoming movie have become one of Hollywood's most popular genres over the past several of years, with films telling the stories of Elvis Presley, Amy Winehouse, and Bob Marley among the most recent releases.

Upcoming music biopics also include "A Complete Unknown," with Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, and a Michael Jackson biopic set to premiere next year.
