Earlier this month, SpinMedia announced that the print edition of Vibe would be discontinued and word on web is XXL is following suit going digital-only after 17 years in the game.
As reported by MTV, the magazine will no longer produce print copies following their upcoming October/November issue. The news of the digital move comes after Townsquare Media's acquisition of the publication from Harris Publications.
"We incubated something digitally, but the Townsquare people can take it to the next level with their digital expertise," said Ben Harris, president of Harris Publications, who started XXL in 1997 to rival Vibe.
The focus will now shift from print to newer forms of media and revenue streams.
"We think XXL has strong potential in both the digital and live events market," Bill Wilson, the chief content officer of Townsquare, told the New York Post. The company operates 331 radio stations, as well as a number of websites.
During its nearly two decade long run, XXL became widely known for its annual Freshman class covers.
Unlike Spin Media Group, which cut 19 positions upon decision to end the print edition of Vibe, Townsquare will offer 11 XXL editorial and digital ad sales team employees jobs.
"I don't think it is a cost-cutting thing," Harris said. "I think it is an opportunity for Townsquare to do more with [the franchise]."
Townsquare is in the process of acquiring two other digital properties, Antenna Magazine and King-mag.com, a suspended entity that will have a digital relaunch.
