It's finally here. Of course I'm talking about the premiere in the latest Shondaland series, How To Get Away With Murder, which will no doubt grace a multitude of televisions this evening. In case the build up for this show wasn't already huge (it was) it grabbed even more headlines in the past week when a New York Times TV critic made the mistake of dismissing the amazing Shonda Rhimes as an "angry, black woman". Fans as well as a nice parade of stars who have been fortunate enough to voice characters carefully crafted by Rhimes swung back until the Times issued an apology of sorts and even more people were prepared to tune into this new show.
How To Get Away With Murder is a juicy legal melodrama that features Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, a law professor with a very unique approach. She believes that if you can put together the pieces of a complicated murder then you also can figure out how to commit one while flying below the radar. She teaches her students in a way that pits them all willingly against each other for just a moment of acknowledgment not to mention a decent grade.
Naturally, Keating's personal life is a hot mess, but that's what we expect from a show that Rhimes is involved with, right? She has a way of creating extremely human characters that make the worst choices but as viewers' we always kind of just get it. There are no real, true bad guys in Shondaland, just imperfect, hurting people that lash out and self destruct.
How To Get Away With Murder has been dubbed like The Paper Chase, but on steroids. The reviews of Davis' performance have been extraordinary, making this one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the season. Check out the preview below. Will you be tuning in tonight?
