One Direction: Steal My Girl
After getting a tip from fans on Twitter, Gilbert had a joking message to One Direction: "Props to the @onedirection "steal my girl" single for reworking the "it's not your fault" piano part into a top 40 single. Let me get a cut."
Following Gilbert's initial tweet, fellow pop-punk pioneer Williams had to agree with the musical assessment. She snarked on One Direction with a little help from a Kermit the Frog meme. Though, eventually she just laid the blame on whoever the boy band collaborated with to write the new track.
Beginning of that new 1D song couldn't sound any more like the beginning of @newfoundglory's "its not your fault" but pic.twitter.com/UFlFjImxrK

I realize that I'm gonna get hate from a very large fanbase for that. But really, it has more to do w/ whoever pitched or cowrote the song. — hayley from Paramore (@yelyahwilliams) September 29, 2014
Williams was right about the flood of hate, with Directioners on Twitter spewing hateful, sexist comments toward the Paramore frontwoman, which Gilbert was quick to call out on Twitter, after insisting that his initial tweet was a joke, stating that "music influences music."
Wow did not realize this was gonna be a story. It's not a story. My original tweet was a joke anyway. Music influences music. No one cares — Chad Gilbert (@XChadballX) September 29, 2014
.@onedirection Your fans spew the most racist/homophobic/sexist hate I have ever seen on the Internet... You have a platform to change that. — Chad Gilbert (@XChadballX) September 30, 2014
There is a notable similarity between "Steal My Girl" and "It's Not Your Fault," though the former kicks up the tempo a few beats, there's a clear cinematic musical pattern. However, both songs also bear a striking resemblance to the Journey smash hit "Faithfully," so yeah, music influences music.
