Banda performer Luis Coronel became the first teenager in quite some time to land atop the Top Latin Albums chart as his Quiero Ser Tu Dueño rose to the no. 1 spot last week. The last time someone younger than him managed the feat was during 2001 when Jessie Morales scored the no. 1 album with Homejae A Chalino Sanchez (Morales was also 18 when he topped the charts, although he was a few months younger than Coronel is now).
Quiero Ser Tu Dueño sold 10,000 copies in its first week, placing at no. 33 on the Billboard 200. Coronel came close to landing the top spot last year with his debut, Con La Frente En Alto, which entered the charts at no. 2, selling 5,000 copies. The doubling of his sales over the course of a year comes with a general increase in influence, one which Billboard noted in its annual 21 Under 21 list. Coronel came in at no. 11 this year, sandwiched between rapper Chief Keef and rising star Meghan Trainor, respectively.
"It's a dream come true," he said in an interview with Billboard earlier during 2014. "I promised my dad before he passed away that I would take care of the family. I'm able to give my mom a house...and that's because of the singing. I feel blessed."
Coronel won the 2014 Latin Billboard Music Award for New Artist of The Year in August.
