Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella found himself in the hot seat late last week when asked a serious question about pay equality. Currently women generally are earning 78 cents on the dollar to men and so it made perfect sense to ask Nadella how a woman should proceed in business in order to make money. Rather than offering wisdom that the women in attendance could put into use he seemed to be stuck in the dark ages. Not only does Nardella support starting a position at a lower pay rate but he also is against asking for a raise.
Instead Nadella suggests women should just trust that good karma will amount to a raise in the workplace. He said "one of the additional superpowers that, quite frankly, women who don't ask for a raise have. Because that's good karma. It'll come back because somebody's going to know that's the kind of person that I want to trust. That's the kind of person that I want to really give more responsibility to. And in the long-term efficiency, things catch up."
So apparently Nardella believes that good karma rolling back to women is what will ultimately put food on their tables and clothes on their kids' backs. Needless to say, this bit of genius didn't sit well with any of the women in attendance and even celebs were lashing out at Nadella. Cher went off on a Twitter rant saying in three separate tweets,
"#MICROSOFTS MISOGYNIST IN CHIEF WANTS WOMEN 2WAIT 4THE 'REWARDS' F HIM?ITS CALLED EQUAL PAY 4EQUAL WORK! DONT PAT OUR HEADS,GIVE US RESPECT
WAIT 4 THEIR REWARDS?MR '1950′s' #NADELLA ?U'VE GOT A LOT OF FING NERVE? WOMEN DONT WANT 2 WAIT TILL MEN FEEL GENEROUS? ?Don't take This BS
R NO LADIES UPSET, THAT THEY MAKE 84-87 CENTS TO A MANS DOLLAR ?! WTF WOMEN! AM I WRONG? R WE HAPPY 2B 2nd CLASS CITIZENS?I AM NOT? F THAT?"
We have to admit, it's really nice to hear Cher—a woman with millions in the bank—sticking up for all of the women that get up and go to work each day knowing that their ability is worth far less than a man's even if the job is identical. Can you believe that Nardella suggested waiting for karma to even out the equal pay scales? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
