Lana Del Rey's two-night stand at Hollywood Forever Cemetery reached its conclusion late Saturday night, and the singer has apparently overcome the on-stage woes that plagued her during a rush to stardom in 2012. The Ultraviolence singer's most well-known quote is, "I wish I was dead already," so the cemetery was obviously a strong setting for her morbid tunes.
As our own Joey DeGroot pointed out in September, HFC is the "final resting place of countless figures in the entertainment industry, including actor Mickey Rooney and director Cecil B. DeMille, so a performance there would tie in pretty well with Del Rey's fixation on classic Hollywood."
He also noted that HFC concerts are common, but few artists play outdoors on the Fairbanks Lawn, as Del Rey chose to do.
Those in attendance offered positive reviews.
From radio.com's Scott T. Sterling: "Video Games" took on a hushed reverence as a quiet crowd sing-along, while the hip-hop-tinged drama of "Born to Die" was elevated to one of the show's most life-affirming moments, given the surroundings. It was the song where many concertgoers could be seen hugging, taking selfies and having personal moments set to Del Rey's ode to the inevitable.
From mtv.com's Chrissy Mahlmeister: The highlight of the show definitely had to be when she performed "Ultraviolence" with actual footage of the Hollywood Forever Cemetery behind her (YASSS), and FYI, by now everyone in the crowd is either swaying or making out. Then, she slows it down on the piano for "Old Money" and transitions into "Summertime Sadness." When she gets to the lyrics "I got my red dress on tonight; dancing in the dark in the pale moonlight; done my hair up real big beauty queen style," I make the realization that all of that is ACTUALLY HAPPENING IRL AT THIS VERY MOMENT, and I feel so #blessed. *insert prayer hands emojis here*
