Forever 21, an international women's clothing store, does not exactly cater to the hardcore hip-hop community. So it is no wonder patrons were upset earlier this month when a Singapore store blasted "PWA" by 5th Ward Boyz, a song with explicit lyrics. The store has since apologized.
HipHopDX points out the lyrics are far from friendly: "Weed and alcohol it seems to satisfy us all, indeed / Don't even trip, half of you b----es like p---y too / Love to smoke w--d and get high, sip, serve / And let the freaky s--t up out /And suck the skin off a n---a d--k / I's a playa, I's a never had to trick."
One young woman was so upset that she blogged about the experience. Gabrielle Singh, daughter of famous Singaporean actor Gurmit Singh, posted the following:
"Earlier today, around 8pm, I was in your Somerset 313 outlet. I was there with my mother and my baby sister, and the moment we stepped in, your store was blaring rap music. Fine. I don't mind rap. What I did mind was the lyrics, which declared half you b***hes like p***y too.'
"You are a store that thirteen-year-old girls frequent. You are a store that women can bring their children to... So when your store decides to blast music that screams 'you have a right to rape her' and 'I won't have sex with her unless she has big breasts' and 'I'll only love you if you suck my penis', I have a problem with that."
Then she went academic:
"I'm looking at the American Academy of Pediatrics' article 'Committee on Public Education' right now, and on page 341, it explains that explicit lyrics warp our perception of the world around us."
Singh posted an update soon after that said Forever 21 apologized for its musical selection, according to Yahoo!.
"F21 has responded and apologised for the music, which is pretty great!" Singh wrote. "However, misogyny as a common occurrence in our everyday lives is still a big issue..."
