If you're anything like us you know that Homecoming dances et al end up being a huge disappointment. Thus it'd be nice to have a random celebrity musician show up at the event so at least we'd have a story to tell. Students at Aspire Pacific Academy in Huntington Park, CA will be able to tell their kids about how Charlie XCX showed up at their fall dance.
The performer showed up and performed a few of her hits, including "Fancy," "Boom Clap" and "I Love It" (which she wrote for Icona Pop). Two of those songs seem wildly inappropriate for a high school audience but chaperones get caught up in the moment as well.
"Homecoming dances and proms are an American thing I've always been very fascinated with because all of my favorite movies end with a prom or something like that," said XCX, who grew up in Britain where apparently such awkward events don't occur. "I was really excited because I thought it was going to be like my own Jawbreaker moment."
Unfortunately, the pop star's performance was not based strictly on an academic interest in American high school culture, according to Billboard. Video game producer Ubisoft sponsored the happening in support of its new game Just Dance 2015. The event also featured appearances by actress Bella Thorne (of My Own Worst Enemy) and YouTube's Tyler Oakley. The latter character played the game with students and also crowned the homecoming court. Although a fair amount of free stuff was given out, Ubisoft essentially hijacked the dance, an action more in line with some of the company's more popular titles.
The students however loved it. They didn't care.
