Want Your Little One to Be the Next Avicii? Baby DJ School Begins Classes Sept. 18 in Brooklyn

Is your little one sick of tired songs like "Row Your Boat" and "Old MacDonald?" Do you think your baby has what it takes to be the next Avicii? Well, if you live near the Brooklyn area, you're in luck! Introducing, Baby DJ School: Empowering the super young to mix music that is super dope.

No, this is not a joke. These aren't the opening lines to an SNL commerical skit. This is for real.

DJ and composer Natalie Elizabeth Weiss — who has shared bills with members of LCD Soundsystem, Psychedelic Furs, Butthole Surfers, Dirty Projectors and Fischerspooner — has developed a class designed to teach children age 3 to 36 months how to drop a sick beat.

According to her press release, "original songs such as 'Makin' Our Favorite Beat Drop' and 'That's Why Daddy Loves Disco' will transform the ordinary Mommy-and-me sing-along experience into an educational escapade into the wonderful worlds of electro, hip-hop, and house!"

Using modern DJ equipment, babies will be instructed on how to play and handle vinyl, how to mix and match beats, and how to incorporate fun samples.

"Why should children hear the same nursery songs underscored by the same instruments time and time?" Weiss suggests. "Switch out a guitar for a sampler, a piano for a mixing board and a song about black sheep for a song about back beats."

A parent sending their young one to music lessons isn't a new concept. But is the age group that Weiss is targeting a bit to young to benefit from such a class?

According to a study by McMaster University in Canada, one-year-old babies who participate in music classes with their parents communicate better, smile more, and have higher levels of brain responses to music. For example, they would prefer songs that were in key.

Even if these classes don't propel these babies to be baby DJ geniuses, early exposure to music wouldn't be a bad thing. It is doubtful that these babies will retain any of the technical knowledge they learn in class, but it might help them in their musical growth.

Baby DJ School classes take place at Cool Pony Crown Heights on Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., starting Sept. 18. The sessions are eight weeks long and cost $200 per family. Weiss is also offering a free trial class for parents who are interested.
