We thank Jack White for directing us to this gem.
The clip is of a drummer named Dan Weiss imitating auctioneer Ty Thompson's "amazing auctioneering" using drum beats. It is remarkable how Weiss was able to recreate the rhythm of spoken word through his drumming.
Weiss commented on the video after it garnered (at press time) 118,784 views, saying "Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to watch this. I appreciate it and appreciate your kind words and support. Look for another similar one of these speech / drum clips to be up in a week or two."
From what we could find on his website and in a New York Times article, Weiss is a jazz drummer who focuses on Indian rhythmic cycles. He grew up in Tenafly, N.J., and is involved in a few projects that center around long-form music writing. He has a musical guru named Pandit Samir Chatterjee, to whom he has devoted a section of his website.
We will let you know when Weiss' next spoken-word to drum interpretation comes out. But for now, enjoy his Ty Thompson piece here, and let us know what you think of it in the comment section below.
