Sam Smith trades in delicate piano melodies for hard-hitting guitars and drums on his newest single "Like I Can."
The singer shared the audio via Twitter, writing "Incredibly happy to announce that my next single will be LIKE I CAN!!" Billboard reports. Smith's stellar vocals are accompanied by a stomping beat as he sings another heartbreaker. "A chance encounter of circumstance / Baby he's a mantra, keeps your mind entranced / He could be the silence in this mayhem, but then again / He'll never love you like I can," he sings. Listen to the track below.
"Like I Can" is the fifth single off of Smith's huge debut album In the Lonely Hour, which came out in May. The record, propelled by "Money on My Money" and the wildly popular ballad "Stay with Me," peaked at number two on the Billboard 200 albums chart. According to Smith's chart history, the record is currently sitting at the number six spot.
"With In the Lonely Hour's orchestral flourishes and focus on a single unrealized affair, it seems the baby-faced singer is being positioned as a male Adele," Rolling Stone wrote. "But while the album flirts with a few radiant moments, Smith's endless yearning isn't wrapped in as many irresistible packages."
After the album's release, Smith addressed his sexuality during an interview with Fader. "I want to make it a normality because this is a non-issue," he said about the album, which is about a guy who didn't return Smith's feelings of love. "People wouldn't ask a straight person these questions. I've tried to be clever with this album, because it's also important to me that my music reaches everybody. I've made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody - whether it's a guy, a female or a goat - and everybody can relate to that."
